The Science of Stone Veneer
Whether using manufactured stone or natural thin stone, veneer siding is an adhered masonry system. Unlike traditional full-bed masonry that carries its own weight, adhered veneer relies entirely on the bond between the stone, the mortar, the lath, and the substrate.
The critical failure point in most stone veneer installations is not the stone itself, but the lack of moisture management behind it. Masonry is porous. It absorbs water. If a proper weather-resistive barrier (WRB) and drainage mat are not installed, that water transfers directly into the wood framing or sheathing.
We approach stone veneer installation and repair by prioritizing the drainage plane, weep systems, and flashing at transitions. A beautiful stone facade is worthless if the wall behind it is rotting.

Why Stone Veneer Systems Fail
Understanding the root cause of veneer failure is essential. Surface-level repairs without addressing the underlying moisture management system will only mask the problem temporarily.
Trapped Moisture
Without a drainage mat or proper weep screed, water that penetrates the stone cannot escape. It becomes trapped against the WRB, eventually finding its way into the framing and causing rot.
Missing Flashing
Improper or missing flashing at windows, doors, and roof-to-wall intersections allows bulk water to bypass the veneer system entirely, leading to severe interior water damage.
Delamination
Poor mortar adhesion, often caused by incorrect mix ratios, applying mortar to dry or dirty substrates, or failing to use a scratch coat, causes the stone to detach and fall off the wall.
Efflorescence
White, powdery stains on the stone surface indicate water is moving through the masonry, dissolving salts, and depositing them on the face. It is a clear sign of excessive moisture retention.
Our Installation & Repair Process
Every stone veneer project follows a disciplined sequence. Skipping steps or compromising on materials guarantees premature failure.
Substrate Inspection
We evaluate the existing sheathing and framing for rot, structural integrity, and deflection. Any compromised materials must be replaced before the veneer system is applied.
Moisture Barrier (WRB)
We install a high-quality weather-resistive barrier, properly lapped and taped, to protect the building envelope from moisture intrusion.
Drainage Mat & Weeps
A drainage plane is established using a rainscreen mat, and weep screeds are installed at the base of the wall to ensure water has a clear exit path.
Lath & Scratch Coat
Corrosion-resistant metal lath is securely fastened to the framing, followed by a Type S or polymer-modified scratch coat to provide a solid bonding surface.
Stone Adhesion
Each stone is back-buttered with high-bond mortar and pressed firmly into the scratch coat, ensuring 100% coverage and eliminating voids where water could collect.
Joint Pointing & Tooling
Joints are filled with mortar and tooled to shed water efficiently. Proper tooling compresses the mortar, increasing its density and weather resistance.
